Geranium Project – UK/EU Terms of Service

Version 1.0
Last Updated: 2026-02-18
Issued By: SafeToNet Limited

These Terms of Service (“Terms”) constitute a legally binding agreement between you and SafeToNet Limited (“SafeToNet”, “we”, “us”, “our”). They govern your access to and use of the Geranium Project mobile applications, including the Geranium Parent App, the Geranium Child App, associated AI models, storage-analysis features, software components, and related functionality (collectively, the “App”).

By downloading, installing, accessing, or using the App, you confirm that you have read, understood, and agree to be bound by these Terms. If you do not agree, you must not use the App.

The purpose of the App is to allow SafeToNet to improve on the accuracy and quality of its products and to improve ad enhance the levels of online safety that it provides to children. Therefore, and by default, it is not an App that is ready for full-market use and is therefore likely to contain errors and omissions. No warranty of accuracy or competency of the technology are implied in the deployment and use of the App.

1. Definitions

“App” means the Geranium Project applications and all associated features, software, AI models, tools, and interfaces.
“Parent App” means the Geranium application used by a parent or legal guardian for onboarding, configuration, and device management.
“Child App” means the Geranium application installed on a child’s device that performs on-device detection and protective actions.
“Harmful Sexual Content” means content reasonably assessed by the App’s on-device AI software as sexually explicit, exploitative, or otherwise inappropriate for children.
“Subscription” means a paid licence enabling continued access to App features.
“User”, “you”, and “your” mean any parent, guardian, or child using the App.

2. Eligibility, Authority, and Consent

2.1 Only a child’s parent or legal guardian may create and manage a parent account using the Parent App and configure linked child devices. Parents or legal guardians are responsible for account-level decisions, billing, and overall configuration of the App.

2.2 The Child App may be installed by the parent or legal guardian together with the child, or by the child on a device that is linked to a parent account. Installation requires the child to proceed through an explicit, age-appropriate consent and explanation journey.

2.3 SafeToNet provides in-app explanations, disclosures, and consent mechanisms within the Child App to ensure that children understand, to the extent appropriate for their age and capacity, that visual content may be analysed and that automated protective actions may occur.

2.4 During Parent App setup, users must confirm that they are the child’s parent or legal guardian and have the necessary authority. SafeToNet relies on this confirmation and does not independently verify such authority. Where an account is created via SafeToNet’s website rather than within the App, the parent or legal guardian may be asked to provide a limited child age band as part of account setup, as described in the Privacy Policy.

3. Description of the App

3.1 Parent App

The Parent App allows parents and legal guardians to:

  • create and manage accounts;
  • onboard and link child devices;
  • manage access and linked devices;
  • configure operational parameters for the Child App.

The Parent App does not receive, store, or display detection results, images, video content, or classification outputs from a child’s device.

3.2 Child App

The Child App operates exclusively on the child’s device and uses on-device AI software to analyse visual content in near real time. No data detected by the software leaves the device.

The Child App performs the following automated protective actions:

(a) Blocking harmful content from being viewed (other than momentarily) by closing the active application and displaying an explanatory message.

(b) Blocking harmful content from being broadcast by closing the broadcasting application.

(c) Handling harmful content stored on the device by quarantining detected files in a restricted on-device area. Quarantined items may be reviewed by a parent or guardian and may be restored or permanently deleted following that review.

(d) In limited  cases where it is deemed that content has been incorrectly blocked by the software, enabling a parent or guardian to voluntarily submit specific screenshots or quarantined items for review and service improvement, subject to explicit warnings and confirmations.

All detections, classifications, and enforcement actions are performed locally without requiring a network connection, except where a parent or guardian voluntarily submits content as described in Section 6.

3.3 Permissions

Use of the App requires specific device-level permissions. Failure to grant required permissions may limit or disable functionality.

Child App Permissions

  • Accessibility Access
  • Files Access
  • Usage Data Access
  • Notifications

Parent App Permissions

  • Notifications

All permissions are used solely to enable safety, account, and notification functionality.

4. Access, Distribution, and Availability

4.1 The App is provided without charge and does not require a paid subscription.

4.2 The App is made available as part of a limited, pre-release pilot and beta testing programme. The App is provided for evaluation, testing, and service improvement purposes only. Functionality, accuracy, performance, and availability may change, and the App may contain errors or limitations typical of pre-release software.

4.3 Access to the App is limited and controlled by SafeToNet.

  • The iOS Parent App is made available to approved testers via private distribution software known as TestFlight.
  • The Android Parent App is made available to approved users via the Google Play Store.
  • The Android Child App is made available via a private download link outside of the Google Play Store.

4.4 SafeToNet may modify, restrict, suspend, or withdraw access to the App or any distribution channel at any time and without notice.

4.5 Availability of the App does not create any entitlement to continued access.

5. Data Handling and Processing

Account registration, login, authentication, and access control functions are performed using SafeToNet’s backend systems. These processes do not involve the transmission of quarantined images, videos, or other visual content.

5.1 The App does not transmit or store images, videos, or classification results off the device. All detection of harm occurs locally, except where a parent or guardian voluntarily submits specific items for review and improvement in accordance with Section 6.

5.2 SafeToNet processes limited personal data, including:

  • parent name and email address;
  • child nickname;
  • device identifiers.

5.3 Personal data is stored securely in Google Cloud Platform (London).

5.4 Data is processed under legitimate interests and contractual necessity.

5.5 Users have GDPR rights including access, rectification, erasure, restriction, and portability.

5.6 Personal data is retained only as long as necessary.

5.7 Inactive accounts may be deleted after twelve (12) months.

6. Voluntary Submission of Content for Review and Improvement

In limited circumstances when an image is deemed to have been incorrectly blocked, a parent or legal guardian may choose to voluntarily submit a screenshot or quarantined image to SafeToNet for review and service improvement.

Submissions may only be made by an authenticated parent or guardian following on-device review. Before submission, the parent or guardian must acknowledge specific warnings confirming that the content does not contain nudity, child sexual material, or personally identifiable information.

Submissions are entirely optional. There is no obligation to submit content to use the App.

Submitted images are transmitted to SafeToNet’s systems and stored in a secure Google Cloud Platform environment. Automated filtering is applied to help identify and separate potentially illegal or inappropriate material before any human review.

Neutral images that pass automated filtering may be reviewed by authorised personnel and used solely for the purpose of improving and testing the App’s AI accuracy levels.

7. AI Limitations and Disclaimers

7.1 The App uses probabilistic AI software and may at time incorrectly assess harm and by default, produce false positive or false negative results.

7.2 SafeToNet does not guarantee 100% accurate detection or uninterrupted operation. This means that sometimes the App will not block what it should and may block content that it should not.

7.3 The App is a safety-support tool and does not replace parental supervision or responsibility.

7.4 Performance may vary depending on device, environment, and content.

7.5. The App is designed to help make Children safer online. Using the App does not guarantee full safety.

8. User Obligations

Users agree to:

  • use the App lawfully;
  • install the Child App only on devices they own or control;
  • obtain necessary consents;
  • ensure technical compatibility;
  • not bypass protective features;
  • not reverse automated deletions;
  • cease use if parental authority ends.

9. Prohibited Conduct

You must not:

  • reverse engineer the App;
  • modify or create derivative works;
  • probe for vulnerabilities;
  • recover deleted content;
  • use the App maliciously or competitively;
  • violate laws or third-party rights;
  • interfere with security or operation.

10. Intellectual Property Rights

All rights in the App, including software, AI models, documentation, branding, and trademarks, belong to SafeToNet or its licensors. Licences are limited, non-exclusive, revocable, and non-transferable.

11. Updates and Modification of the App

These Terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales. UK and EU consumers retain statutory rights.

Mandatory EU consumer protection laws, including GDPR, apply where relevant.

13. Limitation of Liability

12.1 Nothing excludes liability where unlawful.

12.2 Subject to 12.1, SafeToNet is not liable for indirect damages, data loss, reliance on AI outcomes, device incompatibility, or service interruptions.

12.3 Your sole remedy is to cease using and uninstall the App.

14. Termination

SafeToNet may suspend or terminate access for violations, security risks, payment failures, commercial and legal obligations plus any reasons that are at the sole discretion of SafeToNet.
