About SafeToNet

While the benefits of the internet are immeasurable, helping us connect in extraordinary ways, it can also open doors to risks that can affect our young ones’ psychological and, in some cases, physical wellbeing.SafeToNet is a family company built with all other families at heart. We saw a problem and we wanted to tackle it – we wanted to ensure that our young ones have the tools to explore the online world more safely. With that in mind, we have created a software that uses AI technology to help safeguard the young ones in real-time from online risks such as bullying, sextortion, abuse and aggression. In addition, it works to prevent the young from putting themselves in potential risk by filtering harmful messages from being sent on social networks and messaging apps.It is our mission to help every family all over the world to empower the young by providing them with tools that can advise them on how to stay safer online. Ultimately helping them become a more resilient digital citizen.

SafeToNet has been built for the parents and legal guardians of this world, for the children and young adults.

We share the feeling of buying our children that first phone. For them it’s pure freedom, while for us it feels like another grey hair is just about to appear! We just want them to be safe, well and thrive in this world, but we also want them to take on this world independently. SafeToNet is for every parent who wants a tool to keep their children safer online while giving the young ones more freedom to explore the digital world on their own.

We have invested a lot of time and effort into developing SafeToNet’s artificial intelligence. In fact, it’s a never-ending task as language changes so rapidly as do cultural and ethical beliefs. Our app uses industry leading technology, to analyze and filter messages in real-time that children send online. Computers are better than humans at detecting changes to behavioral patterns, which is exactly what our software does. SafeToNet looks for risks that can hurt or harm the younger ones, and links those risks to behavioral patterns to identify areas of concern. On detecting a risk, it also provides mental wellbeing audio guides to empower them on tools to help them deal with the issues associated with living in a digital world.

The SafeToNet App can currently be downloaded on any model or make as long as it is a smart mobile device (phone and tablet) that runs iOS 11 or higher, or Android 6 or higher. Check your local Apple App, Google Play and Samsung Galaxy Stores to download our application. Furthermore, we work closely with various telecommunications, handset manufacturers and EdTech companies in bringing our digital safeguarding solution to more young people around the world. Many of these companies embed our technology into their own enhancing their own product set to keep children safe online.

While SafeToNet filters outgoing messages, it is not a messaging app. Instead, SafeToNet filters text through its intelligent keyboard. Meaning that the young ones can use all social media and messaging apps normally (less complaints there!) – with additional safeguards in place.

We are so excited to be currently available for all our SafeToNet families across the United Kingdom, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Qatar and the United States of America. But our mission doesn’t stop there, as many more countries are on their way. It is our goal to help you safeguard your children’s digital world wherever they are.

If you wish to be notified when SafeToNet is set to become available in your country, please do not hesitate to drop us a message here – we will be more than happy to get in touch with you as soon as a firm launch date becomes available.

As it is our mission to be there for every family, our team works very hard to ensure that our app is compatible with as many devices as possible. Your family is currently able to explore the SafeToNet app on any model or make smart mobile device that runs on Android 6 or higher, or a mobile device that runs on Apple iOS 11 or higher. Although we have plans to extend this in the future, our app is sadly not yet compatible with PC and gaming consoles.

Our technology primarily targets content of sexual and aggressive nature; aiming to safeguard the young ones against cyberbullying and sexting. Because these type of digital experiences are deeply connected to the young ones’ emotional wellbeing, the keyboard also detects ‘Dark Thoughts’ which include content that might suggest fear, sadness, low self-esteem or anxiety.

The way we differ from other safeguarding tools is that we seek to empower the young to navigate the online world with safeguards in place, while always educating them about risks online.

SafeToNet is available in various countries around the world. The SafeToNet App can currently be downloaded in the following countries: The United Kingdom, the United States of America, Germany, Austria and Switzerland and Qatar. Local subscription prices may vary. To find out more about our current subscription pricing, click here. Please make sure to consult your local app store (Apple Store, Google Play Store or Samsung Galaxy Store) as well for any changes or offers.

The SafeToNet Foundation is a registered charity in the UK (charity number 1179486) and was established to help deal with the real world or offline impact on children of cyber-abuse and the consequences of online child sexual exploitation (CSE). The SafeToNet Foundation improves the education and awareness of e-safety issues such as 'screen-time', and online social issues such as 'grooming', within schools and the general public through blogs entries, articles and podcasts. It also helps many of those that cannot afford our software and will at times gift free access to the SafeToNet software where parents are suffering from financial hardship. Privacy

At SafeToNet we take our duty to respect the privacy rights of those who use the SafeToNet Services extremely seriously. We have devoted considerable time, resources and expense to establish a robust governance structure managing privacy and data security considerations.

Privacy considerations as well as adopting a child centric approach have been at the heart of the development of the SafeToNet solution. As a result, the SafeToNet technology includes the following ‘privacy-by-design’ measures:

  • Purposefully allows the child to remove their software;
  • Explains to the child what the software does and how it affects them with simplified terms;
  • Uses passcodes to pair the parent and child’s device to help prove physical closeness of the two devices and thereby help to evidence the relationship of the parent and child;
  • Has designed its software through the eyes of the child rather than through the eyes of the parent. This contrasts with other tools similar to SafeToNet who might instead give the parent the ability to see content that is private to the child;
  • Gives the child the chance to rectify a mistake without a parent being informed.

If you wish to know more, we have created a section solely on privacy for you here. Please also watch our video as it explains how our software balances the need of a parent to safeguard their child whilst always respecting rights to privacy.

No. SafeToNet’s safeguarding solution helps to encourage dialogue between parents and the young ones about issues that may arise when exploring the online world. Our aim is to raise the child’s awareness and to notify parents when there are risks, they should be aware of, encouraging conversation, while respecting the younger ones’ privacy. Our app upholds the value of a child’s right to privacy, this is why it never shares any of the content the child is sending or receiving with the parents. As a parent, you will not be able to see the content of any messages sent by your child unless they willingly choose to show you. We will inform you regarding your child’s behavior or interactivity only when appropriate.

Our technology does not filter content your child may receive, as data protection and privacy laws determine that filtering the content sent by a person who has not agreed to use our software is illegal. The more children and teenagers use SafeToNet, the less likely it becomes that the young may receive harmful content from other minors.

At SafeToNet we take the young ones right to privacy extremely seriously. When creating a child’s profile, we will ask for a name for the device user (i.e., Amy), a device name (i.e., iPhone), the date of birth and the gender of the child. The first two are just a way for you to create an alias for your child’s device so you can recognize it on your dashboard. In this case, feel free to add a nickname instead as this information is only there to help you!Knowing your child’s gender and age, however, allows us to better safeguard your child as we can identify potential trends in relation to cyber-bullying, grooming and other online threats that occur gender and age specifically. If you wish to know more, we have created a section solely on privacy for you here, alternatively always feel free to reach out to us here as it would be our pleasure to cover this topic  together with you.

To ask us to delete your data, simply send an email to support@safetonet.com using the email address you used when you first registered the app. We will then verify your SafeToNet account and start the process of data deletion which can take up to 30 days. We will inform you when it has been done.

You can request a copy of your personal data by sending an email to support@safetonet.com using the email address you used when you first registered the app. We will verify your registered email address and then collate your data which we will send to you within 30 days of receiving your request. If we cannot fulfil your request or the processing takes longer than 30 days, we will notify you.

Data privacy and handling our customers data confidentially is our highest priority. SafeToNet never shares user data with anyone and all data processed by our AI for safeguarding purposes is anonymized and codified to ensure absolute privacy. At SafeToNet we understand that every family has its own story. Some families are big, some are small, some have many devices, and others prefer to share. Whatever your story is, you can be sure we have thought and designed our app for your family.

As the safety of your child’s data is at the core of everything we do, with every SafeToNet subscription we solely grant the parent access to one ‘parent account’. As the account holder, however, you can choose to log in to this account from different devices.

With regard to your children, you will be able to add up to 20 children devices per subscription.

Using SafeToNet

To onboard your child’s device successfully, make sure your child has downloaded the SafeToNet app onto their device. After that, you can connect your devices by either scanning a QR code on your child’s device or by sending a magic link that will sign them in automatically. Please note that if not used, the QR code/magic link expire after 24 hours, after which you would need to re-generate a new code or link to finish the onboarding of your child’s device.

If you have any difficulties with the onboarding process, you can find a detailed step-by-step guide here. Alternatively, you can always contact our customer support team here to get help.

Our technology primarily targets content of sexual and aggressive nature, as a tool to help parents safeguard their young ones against cyberbullying and sexting. Because these type of digital experiences are deeply connected to the young ones’ emotional wellbeing, the keyboard also detects ‘Dark Thoughts’ which include content that hints at low self-esteem , fear, stress, sadness, loneliness or anxiety. The way SafeToNet differs from other safeguarding tools is that it seeks to empower the young to navigate the online world with safeguards in place, while always educating them about risks online.

We know that everything you do on your device is private, and we have taken measures to ensure it stays that way. By granting Full Access to the SafeToNet keyboard, does not mean everything you type is transmitted off your device, despite the warning message that shows when you allow the permission. Anytime you allow a keyboard to have full access, Apple displays a warning that says the keyboard can transmit credit card numbers and passwords. However, most app and website developers mark password and credit card fields as 'sensitive'. Apple blocks all third-party keyboards (including SafeToNet’s) from accessing any field marked sensitive, so in fact, the keyboard cannot transmit that information to SafeToNet.

The SafeToNet Keyboard does not 'transmit anything you type', as Apple’s warning message may lead you to think. Apple’s operating system generates that message and ignores how our keyboard works – as it does for other suppliers of intelligent keyboards. We want to ensure you have no doubts about the way our keyboard works. None of the words you type are ever sent to your Parents or to SafeToNet. Only you see what you type and of course those you may be messaging. That warning message (which is displayed before you allow Full Access) is there to make sure you are aware of what is technically possible before making a decision about whether to trust SafeToNet. We have your best interests at heart. We are here to help keep you safe and have taken many measures to protect your absolute rights to privacy.

We need Full Access because the SafeToNet Safeguarding Keyboard stores on your device its artificial intelligence algorithms, learnings about the way you type and your knowledge of online safety. Our algorithms run locally on your device and not in the cloud, so your words and content are kept with you and not with us. Without this permission the keyboard would not be able to keep you safe.To give you added peace of mind, you can delete the SafeToNet keyboard at any time albeit your parent will be alerted if you do this. They need to know as they chose to use SafeToNet to keep you safe.

We take user privacy very seriously, and all of the data that we handle is strictly guarded by our Privacy Policy. You can read it here.

To use the SafeToNet keyboard, and in order to avoid clashes, during your child’s onboarding process we will ask you to allow full access to our keyboard. This will also allow the SafeToNet keyboard to communicate your child’s location to you when your child activates this feature in the app. To allow full access please tap on ‘Allow Full Access’ and you will direct your child to the keyboard page of their phone settings. Tap on ‘Keyboards’ and then toggle the button ‘Allow Full Access’. In relation to Apple devices, it is also important to ensure that all other keyboards are removed from the child’s device. In this situation, please rest-assured that the SafeToNet app will automatically prompt a message on your child’s Apple device to remove any additional keyboards detected.

If your QR Code/Magic Link has expired, you will need to re-generate the QR Code or Magic Link on your parent app to re-connect your devices. Once regenerated, you can scan the QR code with your child’s device or send them a link that will sign them in instantly.

If you have any difficulties with the onboarding process, you can find a detailed step-by-step guide here. Alternatively, you can always contact our customer support team here to get help.

We understand that learning how a new app works can sometimes be a challenging process, so we have created a visual guide to help you explore it. The guide can be found on page 23 of the SafeToNet Handbook.

Your Child Account

SafeToNet safeguards you from bullying, sextortion, abuse and aggression online. Our Intelligent Keyboard uses artificial intelligence to automatically and in real-time advise and guide you as you message others and search for content. It prevents you from sending anything that could harm you or hurt others. SafeToNet wants you to freely navigate your online world while being safer and knowing that your parents do not have to worry.

The keyboard detects when you are being bullied, struggling with low self-esteem or showing signs of stress and anxiety. It offers you in-the-moment support by providing a series of calming and soothing audio guides that help you deal with the issues they face.

  • Real-time filtering of harmful outgoing messages
The Intelligent Keyboard is a real-time assistant that educates you to become a safer digital citizen. It changes colour as it detects risk and provides you with advice and guidance in-the-moment.

  • Digital Wellbeing Assistant
While the SafeToNet keyboard helps steer you away from risks in the moment, our powerful digital wellbeing features provide help with stress, as well as advice and guidance and a way to reflect on emotions. All this helps children deal with the issues related to living in a digital world.

  • Emotions Diary
The Emotions Diary is a private place for you to record and reflect on your emotions. You can write about your thoughts and emotions and become better equipped to deal with the emotions you experience from spending time online.

  • For you
SafeToNet respects your privacy rights and will not tell your parents what has been said, seen or heard. Instead the software advises as your safety levels change and notably when risks have reached a level that may mean you need help.

Our keyboard was developed for you – we see it as your personal safeguarding assistant. Our thoughts behind it? That we all once in a while need a bit of help as we go about our own experiences (although the older we get, the less we tend to admit it), but having someone reading our messages is also not something that we want to have. We then came up with the idea of an intelligent keyboard that can sit there and help you navigate difficult situations or give you advice when it sees that you are feeling a bit down. It is your personal companion whilst keeping your parents away from your phone.

Do you have any questions or awesome ideas for the keyboard? We would love to hear them! Just drop a message here anytime!

We built this app with you and every young person in mind - to empower you to explore the digital world whilst providing advice and guidance as you experience your own personal online journey. As we do so, we constantly ensure that everything we design respects your privacy, never sharing the content that you are seeing, sending and receiving with anyone unless you willingly choose to share it. Also, on your app you can always see the insights that we share with your parents. They never access any of the content you type in, nor do they see any of your emotions or the notes you add to your SafeToNet diary – all they can see is types or themes of risk raised by your interactivity online, which exist to reassure your parents of your wellbeing and help you start conversations with your parents about your digital experiences.

Absolutely, you always have the right to choose whether SafetoNet is the right tool for you. However, as you know, navigating the digital world can sometimes be complex and has its downside, so we always encourage you to have a talk with your parents first to really explore with them how they can better help you be safe online. Tell us how we can improve – share with us your thoughts and ideas here.

No, the app does not filter content the child may receive. Data protection and privacy laws determine that filtering the content sent by a person who has not agreed to use the software is illegal. The more children and teenagers use SafeToNet, the less likely it becomes that your child may receive harmful content from other minors.

The online world is amazing, as it gives you freedom to express yourself, connect with the people you love and really find anything you are looking for. However, as we are sure you have already experienced, it can also have its own down sides.Sometimes, there may be too much pressure online to act in a certain way or to constantly be online - at some point this can make anyone feel frustrated, pressured or even a bit down. This app was built for you, and with that in mind we wanted to create something that can help you get to know yourself a bit better, help you understand how you feel through different online experiences and make wellbeing practices available to you that may support you through what is going on in this moment.

The Emotions Diary is your private space where you can expand on your experiences, memories and all emotions you feel – because that is what makes up your journey. When you select an emotion in your SafeToNet app, this emotion will automatically be added to your diary. Here, you will be able to write notes on each emotion expanding on your experience and what made you feel that way in the first place. You can also select which emotion makes up your ‘emotion of the day’ – in short, if you had to pick an emotion to be the one that most defines that day, which one would it be?

Once you build this up, you will, with time, see a pattern forming on your Emotions Diary represented by the different colors of your emotions – this can help you get to know yourself a bit better and see when things have been good or bad for long periods of time. Sometimes we don’t know when we have been down for too long. This way we can know when to ask for help.

The content of your Emotions Diary can only be seen by you, as we believe that it is only you who can decide who you wish to share the content with. This is your private space where you can share your thoughts and experiences as you wish. This app was designed for you, to help you navigate the online world with safeguards in place, but we only do so always with your privacy in mind.

Absolutely! Every day is different, and with that we experience so many emotions. Sometimes we get that one bad comment on social media that really hurts us and grabs all our attention despite everything else that is good in our lives. Sometimes it’s that one friend who just brought some happiness into a difficult day. No matter what you are feeling, you will always have space to add it up and write down about it on your Emotions Diary.

The colors simply represent different groups of emotions. Adding an emotion every day will help you see the bigger picture on how your mood evolves over time. We built it this way to help you quickly see patterns in your emotions. If you’re curious to know which group each color represents, head over to the Face Wheel in your SafeToNet app and feel free to explore it.

There are two ways you can add your emotions to your diary, either by going directly to your Wellbeing feature or by clicking on the + button at the top right corner of the day in which you are in on your diary. Either way, your emotions will always be added to your diary and give you a chance to expand on them if you wish – overtime building your own life journey.

You can change your current ‘emotion of the day’ by simply turning another emotion in your diary into your ‘emotion of the day’. This option is available inside every emotion existing in your diary.

On your SafeToNet dashboard, you should be able to see a hamburger icon on the top left corner of your screen. By tapping here, you should be able to see the Wellbeing Reminder, an option that will allow you to set your notification on/off or change the time of when you wish to receive them.

Once in a while we all need someone to talk to, get advice from or simply have a sympathetic ear to listen to our own thoughts and experiences. It could be that your sibling is just being a bit annoying lately, or maybe kids at school are a bit mean sometimes. Perhaps you’re just feeling a bit low and you don’t know why. Whatever it is, you always have a place to share your thoughts and be listened to. On your SafeToNet dashboard, you can find the Advice & Guidance section containing some articles and videos that can give you some insight.

If you feel like you need to talk to someone but are in doubt about who you can talk to freely, feel free to reach out to Childline. This is an online platform just created for you. You don’t need to tell them who you are, and they are absolutely trained to listen and give advice on many matters. They simply there for you, to listen and help.

Your Parent Account

In case the SafeToNet app is deleted from your child’s device, you will not get a notification on your parent device telling you specifically that this has happened. However, the app will detect a disconnection between yourparent device and your child’s device and notify you of this disconnection via the parent dashboard. A red circle will appear on top of your child’s profile alerting you that there is a disconnection between the devices. If you notice a red circle on top of your child’s profile, we advise you to carefully doublecheck with your child why the disconnection might have happened. We suggest to prompt an open and mindful conversation with your child, as there might be other reasons for a disconnection showing a red circle such as:

  • The SafeToNet keyboard might have been removed/its permission might have been taken away from your child’s device
  • Another keyboard could have been installed alongside the SafeToNetkeyboard
  • The SafeToNet keyboard might not have full access
  • The location settings on your child’s device could be set to ‘Never’ or‘While Using the App’ instead of ‘Always’
  • The SafeToNet app could have been force closed
  • Your child’s device is in flight mode or does not have connection to WiFi

If your child has deleted the SafeToNet app from their device, let us know ifwe can make improvements on our side to ensure your child has a better experience using our software! Please never hesitate to reach out to us under support@safetonet.com and share your thoughts with us, as our SafeToNet families’ experience with our app is what drives us forward every day.

Whatever your story is, you can be sure we have designed our app for you. As a parent joining SafeToNet you will be able to add up to 20 children devices per subscription.

At SafeToNet we take the young one’s right to privacy extremely seriously.

When creating a child’s profile, we will ask for a name for the device user (i.e., Amy), a device name (i.e., iPhone), the date of birth and the gender of the child.

The first two are just a way for you to create an alias for your child’s device so you can recognize it on your dashboard. In this case, feel free to add a nickname instead as this information is only there to help you! Knowing your child’s gender and age, however, allows us to better safeguard your child as we can identify potential trends in relation to cyber-bullying, grooming and other online threats that occur gender and age specific.

If you wish to know more, we have created a section solely on privacy for you here, alternatively, always feel free to reach out to us here as it would be our pleasure to go over this together with you.

Yes, as the account holder, you can choose to log into your parent account from different devices.

There are only a few steps required when removing your child’s device, however, please understand that this action can result in significant loss of profile information and behavior patterns related to that particular device.

To remove your child’s device from your account, tap on the child’s device you want to delete from your parent dashboard. Here, tap the device settings symbol in the top right corner, scroll to the bottom of the page and click ‘Delete device’. Confirm the deleting of the child’s device with your account password.

Growing up in a digital world is not always easy. Sometimes your child may be feeling down, struggling with low self-esteem or have fears they are not ready to talk to others about. Perhaps they are being bullied or a friend is being unpleasant.

SafeToNet is there to provide audio practices to help with your child’s digital wellbeing – offering both ‘in-the-moment’ practices when the intelligent keyboard identifies issues, or practices readily available in their app. It provides reassuring and soothing advice, giving support at a time when your child needs it the most.

When SafeToNet Intelligent Keyboard detects signs of aggression, cyberbullying, ‘Dark-Thoughts’ and other issues associated with digital wellbeing, it offers your child the opportunity to step back and take a breath. This will give the young a chance to stop and assess how these experiences may be affecting their wellbeing while offering tools to empower them to navigate through these events.

The Wellbeing feature offers your child the following tools:

  • Emotions Diary – designed as your child’s personal space where they can feel comfortable to expand on the nature of their emotions and put down into words what they are feeling. It is in effect a form of writing therapy that can help them understand their own emotional patterns, make sense of what they are experiencing and reflect whether further support may be needed.
  • Breathing exercise – as a grounding practice to help your child take a step away from the digital world and take a moment for themselves to refocus, re-energize and pay more attention to how they are feeling.
  • Audio Practices – designed by our team of cyber-psychologists to provide in the moment support as difficult online situations arise. These practices are a point of emotional support, reassurance, and practical advice.
  • Wellbeing Keyboard Button – an interactive bubble on your child’s keyboard that alerts your child of detected patterns of emotional distress. It was built as a way to allow your child the opportunity to take a step back and reflect on what they wish to say next, without the regret of saying the wrong thing in the heat of the moment. It prompts the child to reflect on how certain situations make them feel and identify when they may need further support.
  • Emotions Wheel – Sometimes even for grown-ups it’s hard to assess how we are feeling, so imagine, how much harder it is for the younger ones to put their experiences into context. The Emotions Wheel was designed as a visual representation to help them pinpoint their emotions.

SafeToNet upholds the value of a child’s right to privacy, this is why it never shares any of the content your child adds to the app. As a parent, you will not be able to see the content of the added emotions or notes that your child writes on their diary, unless they willingly choose to show you. Only when appropriate, we inform parents as to the types or themes of concern raised by a child’s behavior or interactivity.

Parental controls are usually integrated within your device to give you the opportunity to manage your child’s screen time. The SafeToNet app can be used in combination with your phone’s native parental controls.

More information on how to access native parental controls can be found here for Apple iOS devices and here for Android devices.

Advice and guidance prompts are widely accessible across the SafeToNet platform and are perhaps the key to promoting a family-wide understanding of the digital world and its associated risks.

With access to a range of different resources, parents and children are able to find information about a range of safety topics. Children can access the resources directly through their keyboard including the moment when the software detects an issue.

SafeToNet currently filters outgoing text messages only. However, we are developing on a solution which will also filter outgoing images and videos. Those images and videos containing graphic material not suited for children and young adults make up a huge part of today’s online dangers and threats, so we are looking forward to helping you to tackle this in the near future!
