Statement on #NoPlaceToHide E2EE campaign by SafeToNet

SafeToNet exists to keep children safer online. We do this by developing technology that keeps children safe on their devices in real-time, as well as on messaging apps, social networks and other platforms. We believe that as a society we all have a part to play in keeping children safe online. 2021 was one of the worst years on record for online child abuse.

Figures by the IWF show a threefold increase in abuse imagery of 7-10-year-olds and more child sexual abuse material was detected online than ever before. The debate about end-to-end encryption can sometimes be presented as a polarizing issue, instead of a constructive conversation about how we can all work together to make the internet a safe place for children, while respecting their rights to privacy.  We are absolutely not opposed to end-to-end encryption and believe passionately in the importance of user privacy. That is why we are urging social media companies, platform providers, device manufacturers and other stakeholders to work with us, in the spirit of collaboration and make a commitment that they will not roll out end-to-end encryption until they have the technology in place to ensure children will not be put at greater risk as a result.

Social media companies currently play an important role in reporting child sex abuse on their platforms, and we want them to continue to be able to do this.  We believe this should not be a choice between privacy and child safety – instead, let’s work together to protect both! The #NoPlaceToHide campaign brings together organisations and individuals who are passionate about child safety, and we are proud to play a part in this. That is why we have contributed our time and expertise to the #NoPlaceToHide on a voluntary, unpaid basis.
